The Giraffe Study · Volume II

Inspired by Botanical Flavor

Black Tea · Cardamom

This piece began with aroma—the depth of black tea and the fragrant warmth of cardamom. Drawing inspiration from flavors found in African cuisines, I paired banana cardamom mud cake with chocolate mud cake, a black tea and cardamom filling, honey and black tea syrup, and an outer layer of dark chocolate ganache.

Black tea and cardamom remained the sensory thread throughout, suggesting the warm, earthy palette that carried into the painted finish. From aroma to flavor to form, the giraffe’s gentle presence began to emerge.

What began as a sensory impression gradually became the gentle presence of a giraffe.

Symbolism

Perspective. Quiet Strength. Authenticity.

The giraffe’s height invited me to consider perspective: looking beyond the immediate while remaining grounded. Its gentle nature and unmistakable form offered an expression of quiet strength—confident in its presence, without needing to command attention.

The first sketches helped translate those qualities into proportion, posture, and expression.

The Artistic Focus

A Gentle Gaze

The eyes became the emotional center of this piece. I wanted to capture the quiet awareness of a gentle giant through the shape of the eyelids, the surrounding folds, and small painted reflections.

Fine fur textures contrasted with the smoother muzzle, while layers of hand-painted color and airbrushed shading gave depth to the face. Each detail served the same intention: to make the expression feel alive.

The Build

From the carved cake to the final highlights, the form developed through four stages.

01 · Establishing the Form
Carving the cake established the long neck, facial proportions, and distinctive silhouette.

02 · Refining the Surface
Modeling chocolate shaped the features, ears, and horns. Sculpted fur and smoother areas introduced contrast across the surface.

03 · Building Color
Burnt Umber and Chocolate Brown gel color established the giraffe’s warm undertones, with Super Black adding depth to the markings and shadows. Moss and chocolate brown tones grounded the piece in an earthy setting.

04 · Bringing in the Light
Airbrushed layers of Chocolate Brown and Lemon Yellow added warmth, softened transitions, and highlighted the giraffe’s sculpted textures.

Black Tea & Cardamom White Chocolate Ganache

The aromatic starting point for this study: black tea and cardamom infused into cream, then brought together with white chocolate. Its rounded sweetness and fragrant spice connect the flavors within to the warmth of the finished sculpture.
