The Creative Exploration
Umber Savannah became an exploration journey in translating the foundational principles established in Volume I into a large-scale sculptural work.
The project focused on developing a tall, structurally stable cake capable of supporting significant height while maintaining moisture, flavor, and balance throughout the sculpture. Building upon the foundational systems introduced in Volume I, those principles were expanded into a sculptural recipe composition designed specifically for dimensional work.
Artistically, the greatest challenge—and ultimately the greatest reward—was capturing the giraffe's gentle character through facial anatomy, expression, and layered surface texture. Freehand chocolate sculpting, hand-painted refinement, and careful observation were used to build subtle transitions across the face, neck, and body, allowing realism to emerge naturally rather than through exaggerated detail.
Inspired by the warmth of the African savannah, the accompanying recipe composition explores botanical spices, honey, black tea, banana, and chocolate—bringing together structure, flavor, atmosphere, and artistic intention through one connected creative process.
The complete No. 4 — Umber Savannah recipe composition will be featured in a future LU'EMBER publication, exploring the art of botanical flavor composition and infusion for sculptural cake artistry.
