Medusa Bust

A Study in Edible Sculpting & Painting

Inspiration & Symbolism

Protection. Transformation. Strength Within Softness.

This interpretation began with a desire to explore the softer side of a figure so often portrayed as evil. I was drawn to Medusa’s connection to protection and to contemporary readings of her story as an expression of survival, reclaimed identity, and the power to set boundaries.

I wanted to sculpt that strength into her face with restraint—a quiet expression, softened features, and a gaze that holds its own. The snakes frame her humanity, bringing vulnerability and protective power together in one form.

For me, this study is about retaining tenderness through transformation. Her softness is part of her strength.

Artistic Focus

Softness Within Movement

Building the bust from rice cereal gave me the opportunity to push the sculptural boundaries, creating three-dimensional snakes that curl and reach around her face, caught in motion.

I used two colors of modeling chocolate to establish undertones for the painting that would follow, building depth into the sculpture from the beginning.

Through sugar and chocolate, I wanted to capture the feminine, softer side of Medusa’s legend. Gentle contours around her cheeks, eyes, and lips bring tenderness to her expression, balanced by the energy of the snakes surrounding her.
