The Dryad
A study in renewal.
Inspiration
Inspired by touch
This piece began with the contrast between weathered bark and the smoothness of a human face. Twisting branches, a tree-trunk base, and small mushrooms offered textures to explore in modeling chocolate, while her gentle features gave the sculpture a human presence.
Symbolism
Renewal. Re-emergence.
I wanted to capture new life emerging from old wood. Her face grows from the weathered textures surrounding her—a reflection on beginning again while carrying the marks of what came before.
The Details
Created as a sculptural display bust, the Dryad is formed with rice cereal and food-grade support materials, finished in modeling chocolate, sugar paste, and hand-painted edible colors.
Artistic Focus
My focus was the transition between deeply textured wood and soft facial contours. Sculpting the eyes, lips, and expression brought her character into view; layered browns and greens connected her to the woodland forms around her.
I enjoy returning to bust studies like this one for the freedom to practice sculpting and painting, follow an idea, and see what emerges beneath my hands.
