Dryad Bust

Inspiration & Symbolism
Renewal. Reemergence. Life Within the Weathered.
This piece began with the contrast between rough bark and a smooth human face. I was drawn to the idea of new life emerging through old wood—softness finding its place within something weathered.
For me, the Dryad represents renewal without losing the traces of what came before. Branches, textured bark, and small mushrooms surround her face, bringing growth and age together in one form.
The Artistic Focus
Softness Against Bark
My focus was to capture the softness of her face against the deeply textured wood. Gentle contours around the cheeks, eyes, and lips offered a quiet contrast to the branching forms and rugged surface surrounding them.
Painting connected those contrasting textures. Earthy browns and greens moved from bark into skin, while warmth and fine detail in the eyes gave her a living presence within the tree.
The Build
01 · Sculpting the Contrast
Created as a display bust using food-grade materials and rice cereal, the form was covered in modeling chocolate and sugar paste. Smooth facial features met sculpted bark and branches, establishing the contrast at the heart of the piece.
02 · Painting the Connection
Hand-painted edible colors built depth within the bark and soft transitions across the face. Shared tones brought the human and woodland elements together.
03 · Revealing Her Expression
The final details centered on her gaze. Painted reflections, gentle shading, and warmth around the eyes and lips brought expression to the face, completing the sense of life emerging from weathered wood.
