Draco Cake
Inspiration & Symbolism
Imagination. Connection. A Dragon’s Heart.
Created for my son’s birthday, Draco was inspired by his favorite movie, Dragonheart. I wanted to bring a character he loved into our own celebration—turning a familiar story into something we could share.
Yellow butter funfetti cake and chocolate ganache kept the flavors playful and familiar beneath the sculptural exterior. At its heart, this piece was about the joy of creating something personal for someone I love.
The Artistic Focus
From Fantasy to Realism
Draco explored the possibilities of realistic cake sculpture and edible extensions. Through facial expression, sculpted texture, and layers of painted color, I worked to give a creature of fantasy a believable presence.
The horns, arm, and hand extended the composition beyond the carved cake, introducing gesture and personality. Painting united these elements, bringing his character—and the heart beneath the scales—to life.
The Build
01 · The Form
Sugar paste and modeling chocolate shaped Draco’s features and surface textures, establishing his expression and silhouette before color was introduced.
02 · Painting the Character
Hand-painted layers of edible color followed the sculpted contours, building depth around the eyes, scales, and folds.
03 · Bringing Draco to Life
Final shadows and highlights united the cake and edible extensions, giving Draco the realism and character I had imagined.
Draco—a birthday celebration that opened the door to Volume I.
