Croc Cake

Inspiration & Symbolism

Music. Memory. Nostalgia.

This piece began with the soundtrack to Crocodile Dundee. A familiar melody brought back the atmosphere and adventure of a childhood favorite, inspiring me to give that memory a sculptural form.

Yellow butter cake, peach bourbon syrup, and dark chocolate ganache carried the story into flavor. Their golden warmth and chocolate depth echoed the earthy colors I would later paint across the crocodile’s skin.

The Artistic Focus

A Moment Emerging

I wanted to capture the drama of Burt rising from the water—that sudden moment when a familiar scene becomes vividly present again.

Shaping the upper and lower jaws from rice cereal allowed me to extend the silhouette and create the open mouth. The angle, proportions, and sculpted textures worked together to suggest movement, giving the cake the presence of a crocodile emerging toward the viewer.

The Build

01 · Establishing the Foundation
Yellow butter cake was layered with peach bourbon syrup and dark chocolate ganache, then carved into form. Rice cereal extensions shaped the upper and lower jaws before a coating of ganache brought the surfaces together.

02 · Sculpting the Skin
Modeling chocolate covered the form, creating a surface for hand-sculpted scales, folds, and reptilian texture. Larger shapes established the anatomy before finer details brought character to the skin.

03 · Painting the Character
Layers of edible color deepened the creases, defined the scales, and introduced variation across the surface. Shadows and highlights gave dimension to the sculpting, completing the impression of a crocodile rising from the water.
